Imagine walking through a lush garden filled with color and native greenery as a live butterfly flutters right by your nose or maybe even lands on your head! The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History opened Butterflies Alive! on May 22. This popular exhibit is once again captivating visitors with the amazing experience of observing live butterflies in their natural habitat.

We invite you to help support this beautiful exhibit by adopting a butterfly. Your gift will ensure that the butterflies have plenty of flowers and fruit to eat as well as a healthy and a safe environment in which to live. Butterfly adoption is also a unique way to honor a friend or family member’s birthday or other special event. This summer the Museum’s Butterfly Pavilion allows for an intimate look at over 1,000 of these magnificent creatures as they bask in the sun or sip nectar from flower. For both children and adults alike, Butterflies Alive! is a unique and memorable experience.

The Butterflies Alive! exhibit will:

  • Be a great place to learn about butterflies versus moths, butterfly bodies, the unusual butterfly life cycle, their use of camouflage and mimicry, and butterfly conservation.
  • Offer visitors the chance to get “eye-to-eye” with a butterfly and to observe these marvelous insects close-up as they fly around and feed on nectar from
    flower or fruit juices.
  • Provide information about local butterflies and how to create your own butterfly garden.
  • Include an emergence chamber that offers the opportunity to watch the butterflies as they emerge from their chrysalis.
On behalf of the butterflies that will be visiting this summer and fall, we thank you for your support and friendship.

Sincerely,
Karl
